AMA presents Brazil, My Brazil: Contrasts of Modernity, by Brazilian artist Marília Bulhões, an exhibition of 15 paintings sharing AMA’s mission of promoting a constructive vision of the region’s future through hemispheric cultural exchange.

Brazil, My Brazil offers a contemporary view of the artist’s perception of her country’s people, natural beauty, modernity and troubles alike, marked by elements such as technology and the futuristic architecture of Niemeyer. These elements contrast with more conservative or less developed areas, which are also vital components of the Brazilian culture, as the slums and the challenges of deforestation in the Amazon, inter alia. Through her brush strokes, the artist examines these coexisting, although seemingly incompatible, worlds.

With an abstract approach, Bulhões assembles a distinct mosaic of present-day Brazil, subtly revealing intricate contrasts while weaving in a sense of cultural unity. The artist also explores the concept of nation based on this kaleidoscope of identities. She portrays Brazil, one of the most demographically varied nations, as a unique melting pot of cultures.

According to curator Roxana Martin, "Bulhões has created a landscape-in-progress that pulsates with the energy of contemporary Brazil. There is a luminosity in her work that radiates even in its darkest hues. She applies paint in layers, with swift textural brushstrokes that highlight the grain of the canvas.  Color is transparent, the forms assertive and elusive.  While some of the paintings speak readily of tradition, others are edgier, with the restlessness of the unknown. All invite the viewer into a space of dialogue and exploration.  This is strong, mature work that fuses beauty, imagination and craft."

Marília Bulhões was born in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte. She developed her technique of abstract painting amid the rich universe of Northeast Brazil and has continued to cultivate her craft while living in various countries in the last 15 years. While abroad, Bulhões took opportunities to further hone her artistic education: from 2003 to 2006, she studied at the Corcoran College of Art and Design in Washington, DC and at The Art Students League of New York. She currently resides in Washington, D.C. Architect Juliana Bulhões was the project designer for this exhibition.

O AMA apresenta “Brasil, Meu Brasil: Contrastes da Modernidade”, da artista brasileira Marília Bulhões, uma exposição de 15 pinturas que compartilha a missão do AMA de promover uma visão construtiva do futuro da região por meio do intercâmbio cultural hemisférico.

Brasil, Meu Brasil oferece uma visão contemporânea da percepção da artista em relação ao povo, à beleza natural, à modernidade e também aos problemas de seu país. Sua percepção do Brasil é marcada por elementos como a tecnologia aeroespacial e a arquitetura futurística de Niemeyer. Esses elementos contrastam com outros mais conservadores ou menos desenvolvidos, que constituem, igualmente, componentes vitais de sua cultura, como as favelas e os desafios do desmatamento da Amazônia, inter alia. Por meio de seus traços, a artista analisa esses mundos coexistentes e aparentemente incompatíveis.

Com uma abordagem abstrata, Bulhões constrói um diferenciado mosaico do Brasil de hoje, revelando sutilmente contrastes complexos e tecendo um senso de unidade cultural. A artista também explora o conceito de nação com base nesse caleidoscópio de identidades. Ela retrata o Brasil, um dos países mais demograficamente diversificados, como produto de uma miscigenação única de culturas.

Na opinião da curadora Roxana Martin, "Bulhões criou uma paisagem em evolução que pulsa com a energia do Brasil contemporâneo. Seu trabalho tem uma luminosidade que se propaga mesmo em suas tonalidades mais escuras. Ela aplica tinta em camadas, com suaves pinceladas com textura, que destacam a granulação da tela. A cor é transparente e as formas são, ao mesmo tempo, firmes e sutis. Enquanto algumas das pinturas refletem de imediato a tradição, outras são mais ousadas, com a inquietação do desconhecido.Todas conduzem o espectador a um espaço de diálogo e exploração. Trata-se de um trabalho tenaz, maduro, que combina beleza, imaginação e arte."

Marília Bulhões nasceu em Natal, no Rio Grande do Norte. Ela desenvolveu sua técnica de pintura abstrata em meio ao rico universo do Nordeste brasileiro e continuou a cultivar sua arte enquanto residia em diversos países nos últimos 15 anos. No exterior, Bulhões teve a oportunidade de aperfeiçoar ainda mais a sua formação artística: de 2003 a 2006, estudou no Corcoran College of Art and Design em Washington, DC e na Art Students League de Nova York. Ela atualmente reside em Washington, DC. A arquiteta Juliana Bulhões é a designer do projeto desta exposição.
