Sylvana Christopher, collaborating with Ivan Chanis Barahona, leads participants in a cross-cultural choreographic work during this hour-and-a-half-long workshop, exploring the how-and-why of our bodies' connections with art.
Sylvana Christopher is Washington, D.C. dance performer, teacher and choreographer. Her BFA is in Dance Performance & Choreography from The Ohio State University. "Soul Infiltration" brought her to study with Cutumba Ballet Folklorico in Cuba in 2002. In 2012, she went to Petit Mbao, Senegal with Papa Dame Gueye to learn about Senegalese culture, drumming and dance. Christopher danced for many DC choreographers and companies and has attended the East Coast Contact Jam, American Dance Festival, OFFJAZZ and MELT. Christopher has presented work at Dance Place, The Jack Guidone Theater, Woolly Mammoth Theater, The Warehouse Theater, The Millennium Stage and The Phillips Collection and taught dance at Holton-Arms School, Lowell School, and Sidwell School. Currently, she is on faculty at Joy of Motion and City Dance and teaches a range of styles and ages and introduces people new to modern dance. She is a founding member of Glade Dance Collective (www.gladedance.org) and is dedicated to creating art of social and political relevance. Ivan's diplomatic work in Washington, D.C. serve as a link connecting people of different backgrounds and cultures. This workshop frames bodies as canvases to paint our lives. Participants dance, exploring how art inspires movement, while using art and dance vocabularies. Enjoy moving together in AMA, amid a talk on methods, mediums, and spaces around Washington that inspire us to dance.
